It’s one of the first questions every business asks before bringing in a baler: should we rent it, lease it, or just buy it outright?
There’s no universal right answer — it depends on your volume, your timeline, your cash flow, and how long you expect to need the equipment. But there is a right answer for your specific situation, and this guide will help you find it.
We work with businesses across Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah on rental, lease-to-own, and outright purchase. Rental is our most common and most flexible option, with lease-to-own available on a case-by-case basis. Here’s how to think through which path fits your situation.
The Three Options at a Glance
| Rent | Lease-to-Own | Buy | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Short-term, seasonal, or ongoing need without ownership | Businesses that want a path to ownership over time | Long-term, consistent volume |
| Availability at Altitude Recycling | Our most common and preferred option | Available case-by-case — ask us if it fits your situation | Always available, new or used |
| Typical term | Flexible — days to ongoing | Multi-year, structured toward ownership | N/A — owned outright |
| Upfront cost | Lowest | Low to moderate | Highest |
| Ownership at end | No | Yes, once terms are complete | Yes, immediately |
| Maintenance responsibility | Often included | Case-by-case — confirm terms | Owner’s responsibility |
| Best when | You want flexibility without a long-term commitment | You want to work toward ownership without a large upfront payment | Volume is proven and long-term |
Option 1: Renting a Baler
Renting is the option we recommend most often, and the one we have the most experience supporting. It works for short-term needs, but it’s also a smart fit for businesses that simply want ongoing access to equipment without the responsibilities of ownership.
When renting is the right call:
- You’re handling a short-term project — a facility cleanout, a construction job site, a seasonal retail surge
- You’re not sure yet whether your volume justifies owning a machine outright
- You want ongoing equipment access without tying up capital or taking on maintenance responsibility
- Your existing baler is down for repair and you need a temporary replacement to keep operations running
- You want to test a specific baler type or brand before committing to a purchase
The financial tradeoff:
Rental rates are higher on a per-month basis than what you’d pay if you amortized a purchase over the same period. But you avoid the large upfront capital outlay, you’re not responsible for major repairs, and you have the flexibility to adjust as your needs change. For most businesses without a long, proven volume history, this is the option that makes the most sense.
What to ask before renting:
- Is delivery and pickup included in the rate?
- Is maintenance included, or are you responsible for upkeep during the rental period?
- What happens if the machine breaks down during your rental — is replacement included?
- Is there a minimum rental period?
Option 2: Lease-to-Own
For businesses that want to work toward owning their equipment without a large upfront payment, lease-to-own can be a good fit. This isn’t our most common arrangement — rental is — but we do offer it on a case-by-case basis depending on the equipment and the situation.
When lease-to-own might be the right call:
- You know you want to own the equipment eventually, but a full purchase isn’t realistic right now
- You’d rather build toward ownership through structured payments than make ongoing rental payments with no equity
- You have a clear, proven need for the equipment long-term
The financial tradeoff:
Lease-to-own payments build toward eventual ownership rather than disappearing the way rental payments do. Because we evaluate this option case-by-case, terms — including payment structure, maintenance responsibility, and the path to final ownership — are worked out directly with our team based on your specific situation.
What to ask us about lease-to-own:
- Is lease-to-own a fit for the specific equipment you need?
- What does the payment structure and timeline to ownership look like?
- Who handles maintenance and repairs during the term?
- What happens if your needs change before the term is complete?
If you’re interested in this path, the best next step is simply calling us — we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a good fit for your situation or whether rental or an outright purchase makes more sense.
Option 3: Buying a Baler Outright
Buying makes the most sense once your volume is proven, your need is long-term, and you have the capital available (or financing in place) to make the purchase.
When buying is the right call:
- You’ve been baling consistently for a while and know your volume isn’t going anywhere
- You want to build equity in an asset rather than make ongoing payments with no ownership stake
- You want full control over maintenance, modifications, and how the machine is used
- You’re planning to operate the same facility and process for 5+ years
- You qualify for Section 179 or other equipment tax deductions that make a purchase more attractive in a given tax year (consult your accountant)
New vs. Used — Which Should You Buy?
If you’re buying, you don’t have to buy new. A well-maintained, professionally refurbished used baler can deliver years of reliable performance at a meaningfully lower price point. At Altitude Recycling, every used machine we sell has been inspected, repaired as needed, and comes with our service and parts support behind it — the same backing you’d get with a new purchase.
The financial tradeoff:
Buying requires the largest upfront investment, but it’s also the only option where you build equity and eliminate ongoing rental or lease payments. Over a long enough timeline — typically 3+ years of consistent use — buying becomes the most cost-effective option by a wide margin.
The Real Question: What’s Your Time Horizon?
Strip away all the financial complexity and it comes down to one core question: how long do you actually need this equipment, and do you want to own it eventually?
- Short-term, seasonal, or not sure yet → Rent
- Want a path to ownership without a large upfront payment → Ask us about lease-to-own
- Proven, long-term need and ready to invest → Buy (new or used)
If you’re not sure, start with a rental. It’s the most flexible option, it’s what we support most often, and it’s far easier to transition from renting into a purchase or a lease-to-own arrangement once you’ve proven your volume than it is to walk back a decision that turns out to be the wrong fit.
Don’t Forget the Hidden Costs — Wire, Parts, and Maintenance
Whichever path you choose, the baler itself is only part of the total cost picture. Every baling operation also needs:
Baling wire — a recurring consumable cost regardless of whether you rent, lease, or buy. We stock and ship single-loop bale ties, black annealed box wire, galvanized wire, and high-tensile wire nationwide.
Preventative maintenance — if you buy, this becomes your responsibility (or an add-on service you schedule). If you rent or lease, confirm upfront what’s included versus what you’ll be billed for separately.
Parts and repairs — wear items like hydraulic seals, wear plates, and wire guides need replacement over time on owned equipment. Factor this into your long-term cost comparison, not just the rental/lease/purchase price itself.
When you’re comparing the true cost of each option, make sure you’re comparing apples to apples — a rental rate that includes maintenance should be compared against a purchase price plus your expected annual maintenance and parts costs, not against the purchase price alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it cheaper to rent or buy a baler in the long run? For short-term needs (under a year), renting is almost always cheaper when you factor in the avoided capital outlay and maintenance responsibility. For long-term needs (3+ years), buying typically becomes more cost-effective since you’re building equity instead of making payments with no ownership stake.
Can I apply rental payments toward a future purchase? This varies by provider and equipment. Some rental agreements include a purchase option or credit toward a future buy. Ask us directly about your specific situation — we can often structure something that works for you.
Does Altitude Recycling offer leasing? We primarily offer rental, which is our most flexible and most common arrangement. We do offer lease-to-own on a case-by-case basis for businesses working toward eventual ownership. Call us to discuss whether it’s a fit for your situation.
What’s the difference between renting and lease-to-own? Rental payments don’t build toward ownership — you’re paying for use of the equipment, and at the end of the rental period, the equipment goes back. Lease-to-own structures payments to apply toward eventually owning the machine. We evaluate lease-to-own arrangements individually based on the equipment and your specific needs.
Does Altitude Recycling offer financing for new or used balers? We work with customers on a range of purchase structures. Call us to discuss financing options that fit your budget.
What if I rent now and decide to buy later? That’s a common and smart path. Renting first lets you confirm your actual volume and operational fit before committing capital to a purchase. Call us when you’re ready to talk through next steps.
